Each year, The Institute for Health and Social Equity awards three scholarships to students from historically excluded communities who are entering or currently enrolled in accredited nursing, public health, or STEM programs.
Although the population of registered nurses is growing in diversity, nurses from minority backgrounds represent only 19.4% of the workforce, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).
Women make up about 35% of the STEM workforce, and Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, and American Indian/Alaska Native professionals represent only 24% — even though they account for ~36% of the U.S. working-age population. The gaps are widest in high-growth, high-paying fields like computing and engineering.
